There is no body to proportion, which is where a first horse usually goes wrong, and the mane is the only part with any pattern in it. The muzzle takes the bottom third of the sheet, so a thick marker fills it in one pass. This horse head coloring page also cuts out as a mask. The realistic horse is the same animal taken seriously.

Here is horse head in 7 steps.
Draw the muzzle first, a wide rounded shape low on the page.
Build the head up from it, narrowing towards the forehead.
Add the two ears at the top, angled outward.
Place the two large eyes with a highlight left in each.
Draw the two nostrils and the smile on the muzzle.
Sweep the mane back from between the ears in long strands.
Finish with the line of the jaw under the cheek.
